Waiver

In investment policy, a waiver is a time-bound, approved permission to depart from a limit; it does not change the fact of the breach.

A waiver records that someone with authority has accepted a breach for a period. Typical reasons are a planned rebalancing, an illiquid holding awaiting sale, or a corporate action. Some policies require the committee’s prior approval for any departure.

A good waiver states the rule, the holding, the reason, the end date and who approved it. It is granted within delegated authority, so larger or longer departures go to a more senior body. It expires, so that a temporary exception does not become a permanent rewrite of the policy.

In Acclimetry, waivers are time-bound and approved within delegated authority. A waiver never changes a result: the breach stays a breach, and the waiver sits against its case. The registry’s breach actions read: remediate the exposure, or record an approved waiver against the case.
