Maker-checker

Maker-checker is a control in which one person prepares a change and a different person reviews and approves it before it takes effect.

Maker-checker separates doing from approving; it is the transaction-level form of the four-eyes principle. The maker drafts a payment, a trade, a price or a rule, and the checker verifies and approves it. The system stops the maker approving their own work.

In investment compliance, the riskiest changes are to the rules themselves. A mistyped limit or a wrong denominator makes every later result wrong while looking compliant. EU fund law applies the same idea at management level: a UCITS management company’s business must be decided by at least two qualifying persons.

In Acclimetry, every rule version goes through maker-checker approval, and the author cannot approve their own rule. The rule’s materiality, from low to critical, sets how many distinct approvers it needs. Each approved change becomes a new version with its own effective dates (maker-checker approval of rules).
